"Godfather" film trilogy subject of DSC class starting Monday

Far more than most films, “The Godfather” and its sequels appeal to the general audience as much as to movie critics and to film scholars. But just what is it that accounts for this broad-based appeal? Is it the story of the Corleones? Is it the combination of Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and other acclaimed actors? Is it Gordon Willis’ cinematography? And which, after all, is the best one of the three, “The Godfather” or “The Godfather: Part II”? Or might it even be “Part III”?

These questions and more will be addressed the next three Monday evenings at Dalton State College’s Center for Continuing Education when Keith Perry presents An Offer You Can’t Refuse: The Godfather I, II, III. The programs will be Mondays (June 1-15) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the James E. Brown Center.

Perry is an associate professor of English for DSC where he teaches American literature and film. He is the author of “The Kingfish in Fiction: Huey P. Long and the Modern American Novel,” the co-editor of “Larry Brown and the Blue-Collar South: A Collection of Critical Essays,” and the guest editor of a special volume of the journal Post Script: “Essays in Film and the Humanities on the films of Joel and Ethan Coen.”
