Local schools recognized for "getting results"
From staff reports
Thirty local schools are among Georgia’s 896 Title I Distinguished Schools named by state school superintendent Kathy Cox during the state Board of Education’s meeting on Wednesday.
“These 896 schools don’t accept excuses,” Cox said. “There are high standards for students and high expectations for teachers. These schools are focused and determined — and they are getting results.”
They include 17 schools in the Whitfield County system, six schools in the Dalton city system and seven schools in the Murray County system.
Title I schools have a significant population of students who are economically disadvantaged and receive federal money to assist with the education of these students. Title I Distinguished Schools that have made adequate yearly progress (AYP) for three consecutive years receive a certificate, while those who make AYP four or more years receive a monetary award paid with federal funds.
The number of Title I Distinguished Schools in Georgia has grown significantly since 2003, when 116 schools were recognized.
According to the state Department of Education Web site, schools that make AYP for three or more consecutive years and have not been on the Unsafe Schools Choice Option list within the last two years will be identified as Title I Distinguished Schools. The number of schools honored will vary from year to year, and will depend on the number of schools meeting the criteria and funding available, according to the site.
