11th Annual Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship

Format and Schedule
The Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship takes place Wednesday, April 16 through Friday, April 18. The field of 64 players is divided into six flights by handicap index, with 16 competitors in the Championship flight and eight in each of the other flights.
First-round matches take place in all flights on Wednesday, April 16. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches for the Championship flight, and semifinal matches in the other flights, will take place Thursday, April 17, along with consolation matches in all flights. Finals in all flights will take place on Friday, April 18, along with consolation finals in all flights.
Eligibility
Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are members of a GSGA member club and residents of Georgia.
Event History
The Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship began in 1998 and has been played each year at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton. This year marks the 11th annual event. Laura Coble of Augusta has captured six of the ten previous titles (1999, 2001-2005).
Host Club: Sunset Hills Country Club
Sunset Hills Country Club opened in 1948 and was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Head PGA Professional is Todd Parham and the Superintendent is Jim Kaczenski. The Pro Shop phone number is (770) 834-6656. Sunset Hills Country Club has hosted the Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship since its inception in 1998. The club also hosted an LPGA event in the 1950s when LPGA co-founder Louise Suggs’ father, Johnny Suggs, served as the head golf professional.
Directions to the club: I-20 West to Exit 24/Hwy. 61. Go south. Hwy. 61 merges with Hwy 166. Follow Hwy. 61/Hwy. 166 to Carrollton, turn left on Hwy. 166/Carrollton Bypass. Go to dead-end. Turn right on Maple Street, go .75 mile to Club Drive. Turn right to the club.
Sunset Hills Country Club will play at 5,976 yards and a par 72 for the Championship flight and 5,291 yards/par 72 for all other flights.

Defending Champion
Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale, then 13 years old, rallied from a three-hole deficit after 11 holes to edge Erin Packer of Tyrone, 1 up. Stackhouse became the youngest champion in the 10-year history of the event. Stackhouse rejoins this year’s field as the No. 3 seeded player in the Championship flight.
Competitor Highlights
• Six-time Women’s Match Play Champion Laura Coble of Augusta returns after falling in the quarterfinals a year ago. Coble, the ten-time reigning GSGA Women’s Player of the Year, is the Championship flight’s top seed.
• Marietta’s Brenda Pictor, winner of last year’s GSGA Senior Women’s Championship, is the No. 4 seed in the Championship flight. Pictor was named the Co-Senior Women’s Player of the Year for 2007.
• Tracy Marshall of Canton, part of the winning tandem at the 2007 Georgia Women’s Team Championship, is competing as the No. 6 seed in the Championship flight.
