Proffitt, Palmer capture 2nd straight Chen title

Brian Proffitt and Kevin Palmer defeated six-time finalists Gary Herd and Greg Ponitz 6-4, 7-6(8-6) and successfully defended their Division 1 championship in the 12th Fred Chen Memorial doubles tournament held recently at Dalton Golf and Country Club.

Mike Knause and Daniel Ahn beat Phil Johnson and Gary Linn 6-1, 6-3 for third place in men’s Division 1 play.

In Division 2 play, John Joyce and Chris Bailey beat Gene King and Chris Windom 6-2, 6-1 for the title.

Rick Lovelady and Ken Dillard finished third with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Gireesh Kumar and Krishnan.

The mother-daughter team of Becky and Cassie Quast captured the women’s Division 1 championship by beating Judy Coomer and Sandy Harden 6-, 7-6(8-6). Another mother-daughter team, Michelle and Audrey Puryear, took third place with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Amanda Bynum and Kelly Lynch.

In Division 2, Stacy Junkins and Traci Bramlett beat Rekha Geethadevi and Lynn Pierce 7-6, 4-6(10-5) for the title. Jana Brock and Marina Smitherman defeated Brittany Ford and Jennifer Griffin 6-4 7-6(12-10) for third place.

The Division 1 mixed doubles title went to Keith Swilling and Amanda Bynum, who successfully defended their title by beating McKenzie Fleming and Coulter Redding 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Ken Dillard and Melissa Hankins won the Division 2 mixed doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Katie Quast and Dwayne Bordelon. Traci and Allan Bramlett took third place by injury default while leading 6-7, 0-2.

Forty-five teams competed in the tournament. Proceeds from the tourney benefited Friendship House and the Battered Women’s Center.
