Walgreens planned for East Walnut

A Walgreens drugstore will soon be under construction off East Walnut Avenue in Dalton and is expected to open in September, its developer said.

“We’ll turn it over to Walgreens in July,” Buz Copeland, president of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Copeland Properties, said. “They will begin getting their fixtures in and should be open by September.”

The store will be a second Dalton store for Walgreens, which recently opened a store in Chatsworth.

The lot where the store will be built is on the northwest corner of the intersection of East Walnut Avenue and Airport Road. Demolition of a building that had been there has been completed and site preparation for the Walgreens should begin in February, Copeland said. A Nextel cell phone store and a Jiffy Lube had most recently been operating on the site.

Stephen-Smith Construction Co. will build the store, Copeland said.

The company opened 621 new stores last year to bring the total to 6,148.

The new Dalton location is among 550 new stores Walgreens plans to open in 2008.

Copeland Properties was the developer of the Walgreens store in Chatsworth and for Dalton’s first Walgreens in 2000 at the corner of West Walnut Avenue and Dug Gap Road.

Walgreens reported earnings of $2 billion on sales of $53.8 billion in 2007.

A typical Walgreens store employs 25-30 people and averages annual sales of $8.5 million, according to a company fact sheet.
