DSC drops exhibition at Jackonsville State

Early foul trouble eventually caught up to Dalton State College’s men’s basketball team Friday in an 85-61 exhibition loss at Alabama’s Jacksonville State.

The Roadrunners held a 19-10 lead with 11:13 remaining in the first half against the Gamecocks, a Division I program and member of the Ohio Valley Conference. By halftime, when Jacksonville State led 38-34, the foul trouble was already proving costly to the Roadrunners.

The Gamecocks (1-5), who stretched their lead to 30 points during the second half, outrebounded Dalton State 42-25. Jacksonville State also made 26 of 33 free throws, while the Roadrunners made 18 of 23.

Demetrice Jacobs led the Roadrunners with 14 points, while Preston Earle added 13, Ricky Sears had 11 and Sean Tate chipped in nine.

Darion Rackley led Jack-sonville State with 27 points and six rebounds, while Undra Mitchem had 17 points and five rebounds and Grant White scored 11 points.

Dalton State in its first season of basketball in more than three decades and is a non-conference member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

“Playing against Division-I caliber players in a D-1 atmosphere really taught our players something we could not learn any other way,” Dalton State coach Tony Ingle said.

“I’m glad this was an exhibition game for us and did not count against our win-loss record. We must learn from this game and continue improving as a team. We are glad everyone on the team got to play.”

Dalton State (8-1) hosts Auburn Montgomery at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the trade center.
