DSC just eight back at tourney

Dalton State College’s men’s golf team is in seventh place after the first round of play at the 12-team Emmanuel College Invitational, but the Roadrunners are well within striking distance as the 36-hole tournament concludes today.

Playing on the par-72, 6,928-yard Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell, Dalton State shot a team score of 309 and trails tournament leader Southern Wesleyan, which shot a 301.

Dalton State’s Chase Jones and Anthony D’Angelo are part of a five-way tie for 10th place after 4-over 76s. Levi Nix (78) was two strokes back and in a tie for 22nd, while Tobi Ebner was tied for 26th at 79. Tyler Mitchell’s 82 didn’t count for Monday’s team scoring, but he was still in the top 40 of all competitors.

Southern Wesleyan has a two-stroke lead over Truett-McConnell, while the College of Coastal Georgia and the University of Mobile are both three strokes behind Southern Wesleyan. Truett-McConnell’s Deven Broad-away fired a 4-under 68 and leads by six strokes over the rest of the field. Former Dalton High School standout Chase Miller — a member of the Coastal Georgia team — was tied for 15th individually with a 77.
