Nix paces DSC golf team to 6th in tourney

Dalton State College golfer Levi Nix shot an even-par 71 in the second round of the three-round, 20th-annual Webber International Intercollegiate tournament and finished in a tie for 10th individually with a 7-over 220 for the tournament.

Nix’s finish helped the Roadrunners to a sixth-place finish out of 10 teams in the tournament on the 6,767-yard Lake Wales (Fla.) Country Club course. Northwood (Fla.) University won the tournament with a team total of 874, and Webber International’s Bryan Rutherford won the individual title with a 1-under 212. Dalton’s team score was 898.

Nix opened the tournament with a 76 on Monday, but he bounced back with his even round Tuesday morning and a 73 in the final round Tuesday afternoon. Chase Jones was tied for 35th with a 15-over 228, while Thomas Rimel and Anthony D’Angelo were tied at 230 for 43rd. Tyler Mitchell shot a 234 and was tied for 58th.

One of the most important aspects of the tournament for the Roadrunners was their improved performance on the second day of the tournament. Dalton State finished the opening round in ninth with a 310. After the second round was delayed Monday afternoon by rains, the team rebounded with back-to-back rounds of 294, shaving 16 strokes off of its first round.

Dalton State returns to action Monday and Tuesday in the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational hosted by Berry College in Rome.
