Roadrunners capture volleyball program’s first victory

Dalton State College’s women’s volleyball team accomplished another milestone for the school.

The Roadrunners won their first match of the season — and first competition since the college relaunched athletics for the 2013-2014 school year — with a 25-20, 25-9, 25-19 win Tuesday against Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland.

Dalton State coach Bruna Langner said getting the first win relieves a lot of pressure.

“It does and it makes us more excited about going to the gym and practice hard,” she said.

Dalton State (1-4) started the season two weeks ago in Central, S.C., with a match versus South-ern Wesleyan University. This past weekend, the Roadrunners won their first set in a match against the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.

But the first win continued to elude them, until Tuesday.

“I think Bruna has really done a great job coaching,” athletic director Derek Waugh said, “and I’m glad she was able to break through with a win. In the first four matches, they were competitive in all of them and the big thing I’m looking for is competitiveness.”

The school announced the return of athletics in the summer of 2011, about three decades since ending them, and Waugh was announced as the new athletic director in February 2012. On Friday, the men’s and women’s cross country teams begin their seasons at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Powerade Invita-tional at Moccasin Bend Race Course. Also this school year, the Roadrunners will have men’s basketball, plus men’s and women’s golf, cheerleading and tennis.

Langner did not have statistics from the match against Truett-McConnell, which was playing its first contest of the season.

“All the girls were working together and they played really well,” Langner said.

Dalton State’s next match is Sept. 13 in Lookout Mountain against Covenant College. It begins at 7 p.m. The first home match is Sept. 19.
