Bad timing in Beijing

Awarding the 2008 Olympic Games to China was a ghastly mistake on the part of the “Olympic movement.” The games were bound to become a potent propaganda tool for the tyrannical communist government of that country, a fact the Olympic officials elected to ignore. Those officials are now reaping their reward.
Protests, sometimes violent, have dogged the ceremonial running of the Olympic torch ceremonies as the event has moved from continent to continent. After seeing the huge protests in several European countries, officials in San Francisco altered their torch plans this week. Instead of a being the centerpiece of a proud event witnessed by millions, the torch was secreted through the city in a pathetic attempt to avoid protesters, many of whom object to China’s manhandling of Tibet.
The Olympic Games will continue and the government of China will take every opportunity to portray itself as a modern, successful country and the moral equal to any other nation. But that is a lie.
One day China will be free. It’s a shame the “Olympic movement” couldn’t have waited until then, when there would be so much more to celebrate.
