Citizen of the Week: Annette Daniel

Dalton Daily Citizen

Before her death in 2003, Sheila Kaye dedicated much of her life to managing the Dalton-Whitfield chapter of the American Red Cross. She spent untold hours working to improve the disaster program, provide the armed forces communications program and coordinating the health and safety program. Kaye served as the sole employee for 13 years before adding someone to take over health and safety.

“When the serviceman’s family called to send a communication in the middle of the night, it was Sheila’s voice they would get,” said Retta Gavin, chapter director of health and safety. “When a fire would leave someone wondering what are they going to do, it was Sheila that was helping them out with Red Cross aid.”

The Sheila Kaye Memorial Award was created to honor a Red Cross volunteer who “gives without taking, supports without wanting anything in return and motivates with a smile.” This year’s recipient is Annette Daniel. Daniel has served on the board of directors for two years and chairs the financial development committee. She is also the leader of the chapter’s largest fundraiser, Holiday Potpourri.

“She gives of her time and knowledge endlessly. She received the award for her unselfish commitment, dedication and outstanding volunteer service to the chapter,” said executive director Lane Ashworth.

For her work with the American Red Cross, The Daily Citizen names Annette Daniel Citizen of the Week.
