A Dear John letter

Dalton Daily Citizen

John Edwards came clean — at least partially — this week on the long simmering allegations about his having had an affair with a former campaign worker and his possibly having fathered a child by the woman.

Edwards, who as recently as a a few weeks ago was being touted as possible vice presidential nominee or attorney general (in an Obama Administration), admitted to the affair. He denies being the father of the woman’s young child, but claims he is willing to have paternity test.

Edwards also admits that some friends with possible ties to his campaign may have given the woman money to “help her.” Of course, he denies any financial wrongdoing.

Why Edwards hired the woman to begin (at a cost of more than $100,000) to film his campaign “backstage” has not been answered. Little in her resume hints at the skills that would normally be needed to land such an important job.

Apparently, the couple just hit it off!

There should and will be further investigations of this tawdry event. There are legitimate questions about the possible misuse of campaign funds.

Of course many Americans feel pity for Mrs. Edwards, whose brave efforts in the face of her own serious bout with cancer has inspired many people. That she has to deal with this humiliating situation is a real shame.

And the fault of her husband.

John Edwards needs to focus on his family and making a living. His political career is in tatters ... and rightly so.
