Three area school systems closed on Wednesday (Updated 3:50 p.m.)

Dalton State, GNTC also closed; other area closings, postponements listed

Dalton Public Schools, Whitfield County Schools and Murray County Schools are closed Wednesday due to continued and “worsening” dangerous winter weather, school officials said.

This is the second consecutive day of cancellation for each school system. Students in Whitfield and Murray have now missed five full days this year, including Wednesday, after closings during last month’s icy weather that impacted much of the state. Students in Dalton schools have missed four full days.

Makeup days, if any, will be discussed at a later time, school officials said.

Dalton State College and all campuses of Georgia Northwestern Technical College will also be closed Wednesday.

• The Dalton Municipal Court is closed Wednesday. There will be no court.

• The Whitfield County Transit Service is closed Wednesday. The decision follows protocol that the transit service is closed whenever the Whitfield County school system is closed because of inclement weather.

• The Vision Quest support group meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled. A date for the March meeting will be announced.

• The Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, has rescheduled its annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Day at the state Capitol in Atlanta to Thursday, Feb. 27. With the rescheduling of the event, anyone who has not registered still has time to participate. To register, go to or call (800) 272-3900.

• In anticipation of hazardous road conditions, North Georgia EMC’s Trion district customer lobby and drive thru will be closed to the public on Wednesday. The hours for the NGEMC business offices in Calhoun, Dalton and Fort Oglethorpe may be adjusted if necessary. Members are encouraged to be safe and avoid driving to a local office to make a payment. Members may submit payments via the website 24/7. NGEMC will not disconnect power for non-payment through the end of business on Thursday. As always, NGEMC line crews are on duty, prepared to respond if outages occur. Members may report outages using the mobile outage app or by calling any local NGEMC office.
