• The seventh annual Highway 411 yard sale will be held today to Oct. 3 from Leeds, Ala. through Murray County to Newport, Tenn. For more information, call (706) 695-2597.
Oct. 1-2
• The Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center will host an autumn flower show Oct. 1-2 at the center. Entries will be accepted from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. with judging to follow at 10. Divisions are horticulture and design. Horticulture includes potted plants, cut flowers, potted herbs and cut specimens of shrubs, trees, vines or ground covers. Design includes holiday table decor, welcome home, Indian harvest and potpourri. The show is open to ages 50 and up and will be open to the public after judging. • The Dalton High School Class of 1959 will have its 50-year reunion Oct. 2-3. The following classmates have not been located: Jerry Cargal, Gordon Lee McClure, Kenneth W. • The Dalton High School Class of 1979 will have its 30-year reunion Oct. 2-3 at the Norfolk-Southern Freight Depot in Dalton. Cost is $50 per person which includes food, drinks and live band. • Creative Memories consultant Kathy Harper will conduct a “Croptoberfest” event Oct. 2 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight and Oct. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at First Christian Church. “Croptoberfest” is an annual workshop dedicated to sharing stories and creating traditional and digital photo albums. Oct. 3
• The Women’s Enrichment Center of Dalton will host a Walk/Ride for Life Oct. 3. The ride begins at 10:15 a.m. followed by the walk at 11. Registration begins at 9:30 for riders and 10:30 for walkers. The walk will be held at Mount Rachel Baptist Church at 1600 Haig Mill Road in Dalton; the ride begins at First Baptist Church at 311 N. Thornton Ave., in Dalton. Cost is approximately $5 to $30. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church’s annual October Fiesta will be held in conjunction at noon at 1775 Haig Mill Road in Dalton. • The Chatsworth-Murray County Library and the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society will host an art show and book sale Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. The Wright Hotel will be open for tours and the book sale will be held there. The art show will be held at the Chatsworth Depot. Refreshments will be sold by the Pilot Club. The Section House will also be open for tours. All local art is welcome. • Descendants of James Maron Eaker and Lilly Black Eaker will have a family reunion Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Varnell Parks and Recreation Department building behind Varnell Elementary. • Life Chain will be held Oct. 4 from 2 to 3 p.m. beginning in front of K-Mart on West Walnut Avenue in Dalton. The event is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of people who support life and will stand for one hour and pray for our country and on behalf of the unborn at risk of elective abortion. • The Conasauga chapter of the Georgia Nurses Association will meet Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Whitfield County Health Department. A lipidemiologist from Chattanooga will be the guest speaker. Oct. 8
• A meeting regarding school choice will be held Oct. 8 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Unity Baptist Church in Dalton. Outreach coordinators from the Center for an Educated Georgia will discuss the movement in Georgia and how people can get involved. The church is at 1008 Burleyson Road.
Oct. 10
• A work day will be held Oct. 10 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Dunegan Cemetery in Rocky Face. Biscuits and juice will be provided for workers. Oct. 12
• The Lesche Woman’s Club will have the first meeting of its 120th year Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Dalton. Lesche is a nonsectarian and non-political literary club for women. Eight meetings are held during the year for mutual improvement, entertainment and cultivation of the amenities of social life. Oct. 22
• The League of Women Voters picnic and auction will be held Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center. Invited guests are candidates for the Ninth District U.S. Congress, Dalton City Council, Dalton School Board and others to be on the November ballot. Danny Sane will be the auctioneer of donated items such as restaurant gift cards, donated baked goods and more. The public is invited. Oct. 31
• Junior Achievement will host its first “5K for JA” with a free fun run Oct. 31. The fun run begins at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9. The cost for the 5K run is $15 for adults, $10 for children 14 and under and $25 for families. T-shirts will be provided for all paid participants who register before Oct. 16. Nov. 9
