The Rev. G. David Henderson: Experiencing God’s fingers

— I never preach other ministers’ sermons, nor do I get them from religious books. The method I use to select my pastoral sermons and newspaper devotionals is I know the Holy Spirit is hidden in a scripture, word or words within a scripture, waiting for me to find him, to teach me his interpretations of the Scriptures.

Sometimes I have to read the Scriptures many days before finding my heavenly tutor. Such method is my most wonderful intimacy with the Lord.

While reading Scriptures to determine the subject I should write for today’s devotional, the Holy Spirit spotlighted “fingers” in Luke 11:20 where Jesus said, “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils ...” I couldn’t read any further. I knew I had found my teacher (the Holy Spirit) and his choice for today’s devotional.

Never believe the unrealistic, non-scriptural image of your uncontrollable addictions are more powerful than God and you. Your uncontrollable addiction is so far inferior to God’s mighty power that he can use only one of his divine fingers to thump such out of you, but only if you obey his Biblical instructions for deliverance from the power of sin. If the reader has been delivered from an uncontrollable, sinful addiction through a spiritual experience, it’s certain you experienced a touch of God’s deliverance finger!

When Aaron smote the dust in Egypt and  it turned into lice all over that nation as God’s judgment against that multi-idolatrous nation, the Egyptians fearfully cried out, that God’s finger did such miserable judgment (Exodus 8:19). When a disobedient follower of Jesus has experienced a heartbreaking tragedy that you know was because of your sins, such happened by the finger of God. Now use such heartbreaking tragedy to get right with God, Jesus Christ and his church, and live for them the remainder of your life.

The eternal value in one of God’s fingers is manifested, that the Ten Commandments were first written in stone by God’s finger (Deuteronomy 9:10) many thousands of years ago in a Middle Eastern desert; but is now printed inside the human spirit of every follower of Jesus by God’s same finger (Hebrews 10:16).

Jesus’ fingers were very powerful with hidden sin-exposing power. While religious hypocrites were condemning a former prostitute Jesus had just won to her salvation, he wrote something with his finger on the ground that convicted her condemners to speedily leave her presence shamefully and in disgrace. The Bible never exposes what Jesus’ fingers wrote, and the guesses are innumerable. My suspicion is that his writing finger exposed their own hidden immoral secret sins.

There is no English language to describe the fearful horrors of hell. The man burning alive in hell and talking, requested a man named Lazarus to give him only a drop of water from his finger to help him cope with his unending thirst.

It was the finger of the apostle Thomas that healed him of all doubts that Jesus did indeed  resurrect from the dead after he first doubted such a story from the other apostles (John 20:25-27).

Constantly make yourself available to experience God’s finger!
