New leaders at Dykes go low, move up

From Staff Reports

— Frank Travetto and Ron Waeghe put together Thursday’s best round and the best 18 holes so far at this year’s Clay Dykes Invitational.

Another day like that and they’ll be in good shape for the best finish, too.

Travetto and Waeghe’s 6-under-par 66 in the best-ball senior tournament at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face pushed them from second to first entering the final day of the 54-hole event. Their 135 leads the first flight and gives them a four-stroke edge over third flight leaders Fred Peel and Ronnie Tumlin, who followed their opening 69 with a 70.

Three teams are at 2-under 140 and tied for third place — Jimmy Chapman and Don Slater; Jerry Hudgins and Mike Rice; Mark Baxter and Don Russell — while the teams of John Darr and Rick Luzar as well as Bob Varn and Bob Rickman share fourth at 142. All of those teams are in the first flight.

Rickman and Varn led after the first 18 holes. Hudgins and Rice are four-time winners of the tournament together,  including the past three years, and their 67 was Thursday’s second-best round. Rice also won with Bill Ploeger in 2002

In the second flight, sharing the lead at 148 are the teams of Dennis McNeal and Charles Parker as well as Chris DeMarco and Ken Walters, with Joseph Brogdon and Emmitte Griggs (149) in third.

In the third flight, Peel and Tumlin hold a seven-stroke edge over Billy Hatton and Scott Northey (146), with Lanny Bailey and Tom Miller (148) in third.

In the fourth flight, Chuck Farrell and Jim Weeks are the leaders at 147, two shots better than Gary Friend and Kevin Gennarelli. Tied for third at 150 are the teams of Jud Cuttino and Paul Parker as well as Jim Baker and Lee Bradley.

In the super senior first flight, Bob Hullender and Richard Tatum’s 140 gives them a two-stroke edge over Charlie Busbee and Deane Hundley entering the final round. In the super senior second flight, David Bennett and Don Hamelink are way out in front at 139. Ray Darmstadt and Don Lambert are in second at 150.
