From Staff Reports
Dalton’s David Noll Jr. won both of his matches Friday at the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship and will be among the quarterfinalists when the tournament resumes today at Rivermont Golf and Country Club in Johns Creek.
Noll, who earned the No. 3 seed during Thursday’s qualifying round of stroke play, beat Atlanta’s Danny Whigham 2 and 1 in the opening round of 32, then topped Gainesville’s Jackson Bishop 4 and 3 to claim a spot among the final eight players.
A three-time winner of this Georgia State Golf Association tournament (2005, 2008, 2009), Noll will next take on Canton’s Justin Johnson, who beat Monroe’s Mark Sweeney 5 and 3 and Atlanta’s Mark Burden 3 and 1. Noll already has a trio of top-three finishes at GSGA events this year, winning the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship in May at Duluth’s Berkeley Hills Country Club and finishing as the runner-up at both the Georgia Four-Ball Championship and Georgia Amateur Championship.
Among those joining Noll — a seven-time GSGA Men’s Player of the Year who has won the past five honors — are top-seeded Brandon Nelson of Roswell, the tournament’s 2011 champion. Nelson beat Atlanta’s Blake Burnette 2 and 1 and Atlanta’s David Brown 4 and 2 to advance.
But it wasn’t an easy day for some of the highest seeds. Second-seeed Mike Cromers of Peachtree Ridge lost 2 and 1 to in the first round to No. 31 Tom Price Jr. of Marietta, who then fell 5 and 4 to Marietta’s Jeff Belk. Atlanta’s Greg Hamilton, the fourth seed, fell 4 and 2 to Atlanta’s Tripp H’Doubler, who advanced to the quarterfinals via a 1-up victory against Scott Weeks of Savannah.
Also in the quarterfinals are Acworth’s Tevis Upton, Marietta’s David Henion and Roswell’s William Mitchell.
Following the four quarterfinal matches this morning will be a pair of semifinal matches in the afternoon at Rivermont, which is playing to 7,112 yards and par 72. The championship match will be played Sunday.
