Local golfers in action at Georgia Four-Ball

— The Georgia State Golf Association’s 2014 season is underway with two teams tied for the overall lead at the Georgia Four-Ball Tournament.

With opening rounds of 3-under-par 69, Duluth’s John Riordan and Doraville’s Ray Zepp share first place with Rick Dubois and David Maddox, both of McDonough. They hold a two-shot lead over a trio of teams in third.

The tournament, which is in its 26th edition, is being played at Albany’s Stonebridge Golf and Country Club (championship through third flights) and Doublegate Country Club (fourth through seventh flights).

In second-flight competition, Kyle Pettyjohn of Dalton and Chris Tallent of Rocky Face opened with a 75 and are tied with two other teams for third, one shot behind the two teams tied for first. In the same flight, Calhoun’s Greg Brock and Dalton’s Howell Kerr shot a 76 and are tied for sixth.

In fourth-flight competition, Smyrna’s Cal Patterson and Dalton’s Tony Patterson are fifth after opening with a 76. In fifth-flight competition, Dalton’s Dwight Hefner and Duane McMullen opened with a 75 and are tied with two others for third, four strokes off the lead.

The 54-hole event continues today and will finish Sunday.
