Defending champions Mark Baxter and Bill Blalock of Atlanta hold the lead after Wednesday’s opening round of the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship in Columbus.
The duo fired a 5-under-par 66, one stroke better than Don Marsh of Johns Creek and Larry Clark of Kingston, and David Hathaway of Macon and Jimmy Rigsby of Augusta. Marsh and Clark finished as runners-up last year and won this 54-hole Georgia State Golf Association event — which is in its 21st annual edition — in 2005, 2008 and 2010.
The championship flight is competing at the 6,160-yard Green Island Country Club while the first through fourth flights are at the 6,007-yard Country Club of Columbus. Play continues today and finishes Friday.
Ron Godwin and John Williams, both of Marietta, lead the first flight at 1-over-par 72. A pair of teams lead the second flight at 1-over-par 72 — Rick Haugabook of Montezuma and Bill McCune of Columbus, and Arch Arnold and Fred Miller of Columbus. Rome’s Jackie Warner and Clyde Allen lead the third flight at 4-over-par 75, and Ed Mathis of Rome and Virgil Waters of Calhoun share the fourth flight lead with Robert Reichl of Evans and Frank Ewald of Latrobe at 8-over-par 79.
In championship flight competition, Dalton’s Gary Cole and Chris Hall opened with an 82 and are at the back of the pack. In first flight, Cohutta’s David Mansfield and Dalton’s Ron Lowery shot a 4-over-par 75 and are sixth in the 11-team field.
