DG&CC team two strokes off the lead

Dalton Golf & Country Club is tied for second place after the opening round of the Georgia Team Championship at the Georgia Club in Statham.

Houston Lake Country Club holds a two-stroke lead over DGCC and Chicopee Woods Golf Club after a first round of 13-under-par 131. The opening day’s format was four-ball stroke play, and Houston Lake’s Stan Gann Jr. and Mitch Greer teamed up for a 63, while Shaw Blackmon and Shawn Hodge shot a 68.

DGCC, which won this Georgia State Golf Association event in 2007 and 2009, got a 65 from Brandon Kimmerling and David Noll Jr. and a 68 from Chase Jones and Brian Owens. Kimmerling added a highlight when he recorded a hole-in-one on the 160-yard, par-3 No. 8.

Berkeley Hills Country Club and Rivermont Golf & Country Club share fourth place, with those clubs one stroke back of DGCC and Chicopee Woods.

The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face is further back in the field after opening with a 142. Greg Brock and Matt Oxford teamed up for a 70, while Greg Cottrell and Donny Phillips Jr. shot a 72.

The tournament will finish with individual stroke play today as the low three of four scores count toward the team total.
