Noll slips, still finishes in top 10 at state mid-am golf tourney

David Noll Jr.’s final day at the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship was a disappointing one for the Dalton golfer.

Noll, a two-time champion at this Georgia State Golf Association tournament — including in 2012 — entered Sunday’s final round at Savannah Golf Club with a two-stroke lead over Marietta’s Cameron Hooper, but it was Hooper who ended up with a one-stroke victory over Savannah’s Danny Nelson.

Noll, who followed rounds of 71 and 67 with a closing 80 in the 54-hole tournament, wound up in a group of seven players tied for seventh place. In his final round on the par-71, 6,481-yard layout, Noll started well enough, making five pars and a birdie to open his day.

But things slipped from there for him as he bogeyed the next hole, double-bogeyed the one after that and then made four bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine. Noll, an eight-time GSGA Men’s Player of the Year — including for the past six years — was one of six former Georgia Mid-Amateur champions in the field.

Hooper, 25, was in his first year of eligibility for the tournament. He made a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole and closed with a 68 as he finished the tournament at 5-under-par 208 to edge Nelson, a member of Savannah Golf Club whose 67 was the day’s low round.

Augusta’s Jeff Knox was third with a three-day tally of 212, while Sea Island’s Jack Hall (213) was fourth and Duluth’s Greg Kennedy and Macon’s Travis Steed each finished at 214 and shared fifth.

Rocky Face’s Matt Oxford, the only other local golfer to make the cut, finished near the back of the 72-player field. He sandwiched a second-round 70 with Friday’s 84 and Sunday’s 83.
