    In the Class 4A girls state golf tournament last year, the Dalton High School team finished third at Nob North Golf Course. Monday, playing in the state championship at Waynesboro Country Club, the Lady Catamounts finished second by just two strokes.
    “There is just one more place left to win,” Dalton coach Nancy Hallsworth said. “They have the time ahead of them to do it.”

  • Miller helps Mariners to NAIA title

    The College of Coastal Georgia men’s golf team has won several tournaments since the inception of the program four years ago.
    In that time, the Mariners have become one of the premier teams in the country, and now they are truly the best of the best after winning the biggest tournament of them all this week.

  • Noll third at Georgia Mid-Am

    In the opening round of the Georgia State Golf Association’s Mid-Amateur Championship, red numbers were hard to find around the Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee course.
    Dalton’s David Noll Jr. was tied for third at 2-over-par 72 after Friday’s opening 18 holes, sitting two strokes behind defending champion Cameron Hooper of Atlanta. None of the golfers in the 144-player field broke par on the 6,730-yard, par-70 course. More than half of the field was at 10-over or worse.

  • Loran Smith: The Players Championship is major fun

    The Player’s Championship, with the biggest purse and the deepest field in professional golf, is about as much fun as a tournament can be. Formerly played in March, the weather since a 2007 switch to a May date has proven to be golf-attire comfortable. There are fewer weather delays — this past Sunday’s thunderstorm notwithstanding — and that has delivered record attendance and high-fives all around the PGA Tour headquarters.

    Lisa Sellers, the reigning women’s champion at Dalton Golf and Country Club, and Northwood Golf Club’s Darlene Wehrnyak combined to shoot a 2-over-par 74 and win the Ladies North Georgia Invitational this past Friday.

    The Chatsworth golfing duo of Chase Jones and Tyler Mitchell combined to shoot a 6-under-par 66 in the first round of the Georgia State Golf Association’s 43rd annual Four-Ball Championship and are tied for fifth, four strokes behind a pair of teams at 10-under.

    AUGUSTA — Sinatra is gone, but we still have his music. The same is true with Nat King Cole and Elvis. It would be nice to hear them in concert again, however. With Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, we are not sure what it will be like when they are no longer the honorary starters at the Masters.
