Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and other health care professionals recently volunteered their time to provide sports physicals to local athletes.
The medical professionals provided sports screening physicals, which involved checks on vital signs, height, weight and vision, plus cardiac clearance and a review of a comprehensive medical questionnaire. Hundreds of local students receive free sports physicals every year through the program. This year, 1,333 students from high schools, middle schools and Dalton State College received physicals.
“This year, we went out to certain schools and invited other schools in hopes of reaching more student-athletes, which we did,” said Joe Peters, Hamilton Sports Medicine manager.
After all the physicals were done, any athlete who needed cardiac clearance was assessed for free thanks to Drs. Gary Olson and Ezad Ahmad, along with help from Hamilton Cardiology Associates, which provided two technicians and equipment to help run EKG and Echo tests.
Organizations that participated in the sports physicals were: Associates in Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOG), Associates in Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine (AOSM), Bradley Wellness Center, Cardiology Center of Dalton, Dalton Family Practice, Dalton High School nurse’s office, Dalton State College nursing program, Hamilton Cardiology Associates, Hamilton Convenient Care, Hamilton Medical Center, Hamilton Neurosurgery and Spine Center, Hamilton Physician Group, Hamilton Primary Care and Hamilton Sports Medicine.
Hamilton Sports Medicine, a program provided by Hamilton Medical Center, coordinated the event with the schools.
