Health and Safety Fair planned for Saturday in Calhoun

CALHOUN — The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) and The Home Depot of Calhoun are hosting a Health and Safety Fair for northwest Georgia residents.

Planned for Saturday, Oct. 5, at The Home Depot, 1280 Curtis Pkwy. in Calhoun, the event will include participation from more than 20 public service agencies and businesses all with the same goals in mind – health and safety, says organizer Phillip M. Reynolds, who is employed by the Calhoun Fire Department’s Training Division.

“The purpose of this operation is to provide public health and safety education, including fire, crime, and accident prevention,” Reynolds explains. “We will also have a lot of activities for kids of all ages, child safety seat inspections, and Gordon Hospital nurses will be on hand to check blood pressures and offer free health information.”

The event will be held from 8 a.m. until noon both inside and outside The Home Depot. A special presentation will begin at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of The Home Depot.

“For the second phase of this event, LEPC and all local emergency services units will host a K.R.A.S.H. (Kids Responsibility to Arrive Safe at Home) exercise,” Reynolds adds. “This is a multi-agency automobile accident simulation that will include a live vehicle extrication and air medical evacuation.”

Reynolds explains that the primary intent of the exercise will be to convey the importance of wearing seat belts, not driving or riding with anyone who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, not driving while distracted (texting), proper behavior of children riding in a vehicle, and the consequences of reckless driving.

“Bystanders will also be afforded the opportunity to see how aero-medical evacuation and local emergency service units respond to and safely manage an automobile accident scene,” he says. “Everyone is encouraged to attend.”

Agencies and business participating in the health and safety fair will include: American Red Cross, Calhoun City Fire Department, Calhoun Police Department, Chick-fil-A, Cornerstone Speech and Hearing, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad, Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division – Calhoun,  Georgia Department of Public Safety,  Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia State Patrol, Gordon County E-911, Gordon County Emergency Management Agency, Gordon County Fire Department, Gordon County Health Department, Gordon County Sheriff’s Office and K-9 Unit, Gordon Hospital, Gordon Hospital Emergency Medical Services, The Home Depot, Kickin’ 94.5 WIPK-FM, Life Force of Erlanger, Murray County Fire Department Fire Safety House, Safe Kids, and Stacy’s Towing.

Dealing with a suicide or attempted suicide is stressful enough. Some health plans make the experience worse by refusing to cover medical costs for injuries that are related to suicide or an attempt - even though experts say that in many cases such exclusions aren't permitted under federal law.
