CALHOUN — The heart beats over 90,000 times a day, but we rarely pay it any attention until there is trouble.

In observance of National Heart Month, Gordon Hospital officials hope to change that way of thinking through “Pulse 2013: Never Miss a Beat!,” a health fair and expo, planned for Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Sonoraville Recreation Complex. The event, which begins at 6 p.m., will feature a variety of health screenings, informational booths and free gifts all surrounded by exercise demonstrations from Fitness First of Calhoun. Young athletes from Renegade Athletics will get the show started with some heart-pumping routines.

“We’re taking a stand against heart disease by educating our community about ways they can get and stay heart healthy,” says Kim Brazell, director of Marketing and Pubic Relations for the hospital. “This event promises to be a lot of fun as we combine some awesome fitness demonstrations with health screenings and consumer education on heart disease and other important health topics.”

The event is free and open to the public.

In addition, local senior citizens will be treated to a special Sneak Peek event beginning at 10 a.m. that morning.

“All of our local seniors are encouraged to come out and take advantage of the event tailor-made just for them,” Brazell says “We understand that many seniors are unable to attend our evening events, so through a partnership with the Area Agency on Aging, we are able to offer them a special event of their very own.”

After the seniors have a chance to visit all the booths and participate in the health screenings and assessments, lunch will be served. Special speakers during the lunch hour will include Kerry DeFoe Georgia Cares coordinator with the Area Agency on Aging; Dr. Andrew Hester of Northwest Georgia Orthopedics and Sports Medicine; and 99-year-old Ashley Sandrock, the oldest member of Fitness First of Calhoun.

“We do require registrations for the Senior Sneak Peek so that we will be able to have enough food prepared,” Brazell explained. “Registrations are not necessary for the evening event, so bring the whole family!”

To register for the Senior Sneak Peek, please call (706) 602-7800, ext. 2305. Please specify if you have a diet restriction when you call. Vegetarian and Diabetic-friendly meals will be available.
