The Blood Assurance Foundation announces high school seniors enrolled in a school that hosts Blood Assurance blood drives will be eligible to apply for the Crystal Green Memorial Scholarship, a one-time $1,500 scholarship.
As a child Crystal was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, and throughout her life she had to have numerous platelet transfusions. She even underwent a bone marrow transplant to help her body fight the anemia. However, in November 1998 Crystal lost her battle, shortly after turning 21 years old. The following year her family and Blood Assurance established the scholarship in her memory.
To be eligible for the Crystal Green Memorial Scholarship, students must have at least a “B” average and at least a 20 on the ACT or 1100 on the SAT. Candidates also must be of senior status in a high school that participates in, and have actively participated in, Blood Assurance’s Project Lifeline program.
Since its inception in 1999, the Blood Assurance Foundation has awarded 86 Crystal Green Memorial Scholarships to students throughout Blood Assurance’s service area. This year 12 scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,500 each. The scholarship will be paid directly to the student’s college or university of choice.
Applications are available online at www.bloodassurance.org or by calling Blood Assurance at (800) 962-0628 Ext. 134, but hurry because all applications must be postmarked by Monday, March 31, 2008.
Blood Assurance, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tenn., is the exclusive blood supplier for 47 health care facilities. Every day the area’s regional blood center needs at least 400 units of blood from volunteer blood donors to meet the needs of these hospitals.
