A thank you to Medical Reserve Corps volunteers

Submitted by the North Georgia Health District

With National Volunteer Appreciation Week upon us, our local Medical Reserve Corps members are to be commended for the important contributions made to our area during the past 12 months.

The North Georgia Medical Reserve Corps unit has 111 members: 54 in Whitfield County; 4 in Pickens County; 6 in Murray County; 32 in Gilmer County; 6 in Fannin County and 9 in Cherokee County. During the past 12 months they have contributed over 770 hours in improving our community’s health and preparedness. The current dollar value of a “volunteer hour” is $19.51 according to the Independent Sector, (www.independentsector.org). At that rate, North Georgia Medical Reserve Corps volunteers contributed over $15,022.70 worth of services to our local communities this past year. These services were in areas such as: Emergency Response Training for Child Care Providers; Health Fairs; Nursing Symposiums; training and exercises. The acting surgeon general joins us at the North Georgia Health District in thanking our volunteer members of the North Georgia Medical Reserve Corps. Well done!

The following are excerpts from Steven K. Galson, acting United States surgeon gGeneral:

Dear MRC Volunteers,

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, I wish to express my sincere gratitude for your ongoing work in support of the Medical Reserve Corps. Your selfless actions and kind hearts contribute greatly to the well-being of your neighbors and communities.

Disasters have taught us time and time again that volunteers are a vital and imperative piece to any response. Rather than waiting for disaster to strike, you have already stepped and answered the call to serve your community and the nation.

I was, and continue to be, impressed by the activities you engage in to support the public health, preparedness, and response needs of your communities. …The MRC is making a tremendous impact on the resiliency of communities across the country.

Therefore, I wish to extend my deep appreciation for your time, expertise and generosity in giving of yourself to strengthen the health and preparedness of your community and of the United States.
