Prep roundup: Colts have win slip away in 7th inning

Four days after Coahulla Creek High School’s baseball team won a game the length of two, the Colts lost a heartbreaker that means just as much in league standings.

Coahulla Creek lost 3-2 Saturday at home to Ringgold after the Tigers scored twice with two outs in the seventh inning.

The Colts (6-10, 3-4 Region 5-3A) were ahead 2-1 with two outs and a runner on second, but Ringgold got a double to tie the game and a single to take the lead.

This was the first game since Coahulla Creek won 5-3 in 15 innings on Tuesday against Adairsville.

“I told them one thing I’ve learned from out of this group together right now is their resilience,” Colts coach Michael Bolen said. “They’ve dealt with some tough losses throughout the year and had to decide whether to pack it in or fight it out.”

After Ringgold scored once in the fifth, Coahulla Creek responded in its next at-bat with two runs. Scout Plott (2-for-3 with one RBI) and Jackson Sheppard (1-for-3) accounted for all three of the Colts’ hits.

Blake Phillips pitched six innings, allowed one run off five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Zack Glines pitched the seventh, allowing two runs off two hits.

Coahulla Creek has seven region games left and the top four teams in the eight-team league earn Class 3A state playoff berths. Bolen said the Colts currently are close to the fourth spot in the league. Cartersville is first, Ringgold and North Murray make up the top three teams, Bolen said.

“There’s like three or four of us going for the last one,” he added.

Soccer

Southeast Whitfield boys 5, Habersham Central 1: The Raiders (5-2) played only their seventh game of the season and just their second without any Sub-region 7B-4A implications.

Erik Salaises scored in the third minute off an assist from Alex Rosillo, who scored in the 12th minute from Diego Nunez’s assist. Jorge Hurtado then scored in the 29th, 56th and 64th minutes for a hat trick. Jaime Arenas assisted him on the second and third goals.

Southeast took 18 shots while Habersham Central only took six. Raiders goalkeeper Abel Mendiola made four saves.

In March, the Raiders lost to local rivals Dalton and Northwest Whitfield in Sub-region 7B-4A matches. This week, Southeast faces each — Northwest Whitfield on Wednesday and Dalton on Friday — in rematches. The Raiders also play at East Cowetta on Tuesday.

“This is the time you want to put everything together,” Southeast coach Kevin Kettenring said. “So it’s a matter of momentum. It wouldn’t be a setback necessarily. It would be how it happens. We definitely wouldn’t want to stumble like how we did.”

Track and field

• North Murray’s Isaac Pacheco won the 3,200-meter race at the McCallie Mid-South Invitational.

Pachecho, the school’s only competitor, won the event with a time of 9 minutes, 54 seconds.

“There’s usually about 20 teams at the invitational, and it’s usually schools from North Georgia and Tennessee,” North Murray coach Andrea Linsley said.
