Do they deserve each other?

To the editor:

The celebrated “spiritual mentor” of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama continues to divide Americans by pitting special interests against fundamentally accepted American principles of due process, equality and justice.

Rather than seek to imitate his young prodigy and sing a harmonious tune full of hope, positive change, advancement of the common good and improvement of the human condition, Jeremiah Wright continues to pander to the lowest common denominator of a specific group of Americans. He becomes energized, not from spreading the hope for mankind found in the Christian gospel which he purports to advance, but rather from hate-filled rhetoric directed to inflame the most commonly shared emotion of all — fear.

Sadly, the Rev. Wright is exploiting his newfound fame for his own selfish ambitions. It is indeed gratifying to hear Obama speak out against his former pastor.

It has been cynically suggested that Obama joined Wright’s church for political expediency. It would be equally cynical to suggest that now, finally, after almost 20 years of hearing his pastor preach hate, allowing his family to hear such lunacy, contributing his hard-earned money to support such negative blather, Obama is making an intelligent and politically expedient decision to throw his “spiritual mentor” under the proverbial bus. Then again, such cynical suggestions may carry an element of truth and expose the true-kindred nature of these two religious and political personalities.
