Greenspace for property near old Crown mill

The Dalton City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday to accept a small parcel of property on Chattanooga Avenue near the old Crown mill from developer Lowell Kirkman. Council member Charlie Bethel said the property, well under an acre, will be used solely as greenspace.

“Grass and trees will be all you see there,” he said.

Bethel said recent rains should remind people how valuable greenspace and impermeable surfaces are.

The council also voted 4-0 to provide administrative workers who take early retirement credit for up to two years of service or age for pension purposes. Council members voted to cut four positions from administrative staff in December. Human resources director Greg Batts said then one of those workers qualified for early retirement.

The council also re-appointed:

• Carolyn Hawkins, to the animal control board, four-year term

• Jim Bisson, city attorney, two-year term

• Jeff Dugger, fire marshal, one-year term

• Dick Lowrey, mayor pro tem, one-year term

• John Didier, tree board, one-year term

• Melvyn Ottinger, tree board, three-year term

• Melva Purvis, tree board, one-year term

• Chris Stearns, tree board, three-year term

• Kris Thomas, tree board, one-year-term
