• Two special events at Christ the King Lutheran Church will signify the beginning of the season of Lent.
On Tuesday, the church will hold a pancake supper at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday — also known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras — is the final day of merriment before the more somber time of Lent. Since many Christians have historically practiced fasting during Lent, meals on Shrove Tuesday were designed to use up remaining supplies of meat, fats and sweets, hence the name “Fat Tuesday.” In modern times, the Fat Tuesday tradition is often honored with church pancake suppers.
On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the church will observe Ash Wednesday with a worship service featuring Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a 40-day season that lasts until the vigil service on the night before Easter. In the early Christian church, new converts to the faith were baptized at the Easter vigil, and the 40 days of Lent were a time of self-examination and preparation for baptism.
Many Christians continue to observe Lent as a time of self-discipline and repentence, leading to spiritual growth and increased devotion. On Ash Wednesday, worshipers are reminded of their sinfulness and the necessity of Christ’s death for their salvation, and ashes — a symbol of humility and sorrow — are placed on each worshiper’s forehead.
On each remaining Wednesday during Lent the church will hold a small soup supper at 6 p.m. and worship at 7.
