Dancing for a cause

This coming weekend, the curtain goes up for Dalton Arts Project’s latest performing arts production — “iDance.” The production will not only showcase the talent of the members of Dalton Dance Companies but also allow the performers to “Dance for A Cause.”

Keeping with the companies’ tradition of giving back to the community, the dancers have chosen to donate a portion of the proceeds from this year’s “iDance” performances to support breast cancer awareness and research. This will be the third year the dancers have selected to donate money to this important cause.

In addition to breast cancer awareness, the dancers have chosen to honor a former Dalton High School student and friend, John Bruner. Bruner passed away from a heart anomaly last summer while running the Missionary Ridge Road Race.

“The dancers were all affected by the loss of John,” said Berrien Long, artistic director for Dalton Arts Project. “They wanted a portion of the money raised to help Team Bruner fund a scholarship in John’s name.”

The endowed scholarship will be administered by the Dalton Education Foundation.

“One of the special things about John is that he always gave back to his community-whether it was working on his Eagle Scout project at Prater’s Mill, coaching younger cross country athletes, or helping out at his church,” added DAP volunteer Devon Brooks. “It just seemed appropriate that we make a contribution to something in memory of him.”

By purchasing tickets to this weekend’s “iDance” performances, the local community will have the opportunity to give to these causes and see all members of the Dalton Dance Companies perform on March 28-30. The production will include both classical and contemporary forms of ballet, jazz, modern, tap techniques, inspirational music and special technical effects.

“iDance” performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, as well as Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at the Dalton High School Theatre, 1500 Manly St. Ticket prices are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
