By Charles Oliver

Greg Hogan has served as mayor of Eton for the past four years but he resigned effective Monday to run for Murray County sole commissioner.

He and incumbent Jim Welch both qualified Monday as Democrats.

“I just think there’s a better way of doing stuff. I think we can lower taxes. The taxes are way too high,” Hogan said. “I’ll be more of a hands-on commissioner.”

Hogan said Eton will have to have a special election to fill the post of mayor.

“I don’t know when. I don’t know if they’ll try to get it in on this primary or not,” he said.

The state and local primary will be July 15.

Eight other people qualified for local offices in Murray County on Monday.

On the Republican side:

• Kenneth Lee Smith qualified for sheriff.

• Rita Hawkins qualified for clerk of Superior Court.

• Ricky Lee Pritchett qualified for sole county commissioner.

• Rebecca H. Whaley qualified for board of education Seat 3.

On the Democratic side:

• Annette Green and Connie Reed qualified for clerk of Superior Court.

• Incumbent Dale Adams qualified for Probate Court judge.

• Incumbent Howard Ensley qualified for sheriff.

Qualifying for Murray County races for both parties continues through Friday at noon at the senior center. There is a fee to qualify.
