Students recognized for achievements

Several Whitfield County Schools students were recognized for their achievements during the school board’s meeting on Tuesday:

• Participants in the Duke University Talented Identification Program (TIP) recognized at the state level were Daulton Ash, Caitlynn Fortner, Nicholas Hutchison and Natalie Williams, all from New Hope Middle; Hannah Grider and Kevin Powell from Westside Middle; and Darshan Patel from Valley Point Middle. Receiving grand recognition, which includes being recognized during a trip to Duke, was Kevin Teasley from New Hope Middle.

• At the State Social Studies Fair, students receiving participation awards were Allen Moore and Jacob Moore from Valley Point Middle; Hannah Hutchinson from Westside Middle; and Tori Green and Taylor Voyles from Valley Point Elementary.

State winners receiving Best in Discipline were Hunter Sanford and Devin Walden from Valley Point Elementary and Madison Zerbe from Varnell Elementary, who also won an award from the Georgia Archaeology Society.

• Students who will be attending the Governor’s Honors Program this summer at Valdosta State University are Heather Boyd (agriscience), Caitlin Freeman (communicative arts) and Jeremiah Stevens (social studies), all from Northwest Whitfield High School, and Luis Ortiz (social studies) from Southeast High School.

• Students from the Career Academy recognized for the SkillsUSA State Competition were Genesis Morales (first place in food and beverage, she advanced to the national competition); Gracia Aguilar (first place in medical math); Alex Gallman and Joseph Jones (second place in 3D visualization and animation); Jacqueline Figuero (second place in dental terminology); Samuel Cortez (third place in first aid and CPR); Holly Hammontree (third place in teaching assistant); and Erin Amos, Kristie Carter and Christina West (community service project, they advanced to the national competition).
