Varnell, Eton plan special elections

By Kim Sloan
Dalton Daily Citizen

As one city prepares for a special mayoral election, another city waits to see when its mayoral election will happen.

Former Eton mayor Greg Hogan resigned last month to run for sole commissioner of Murray County. A special election for his position will be held on July 15, the same day as the Georgia general primary. Qualifying will begin June 2.

In Varnell, officials are waiting for approval for a special election on July 15 to replace Lindsey Metcalf, who stepped down May 6. Attorney Terry Miller, who represents both cities, said in Varnell’s case, the city had just contracted with the Whitfield County Board of Elections for the ballots, which are now electronic. An application has been made to the Department of Justice to have a paper ballot election for mayor because there is not enough time to get the race listed on the county’s electronic voting machines.

“If we can get an expedited pre-clearance, we can hold it,” Miller said. “If not we will have to wait until Sept. 16 or Nov. 4 to hold the election.”

Eton officials conduct their elections with paper ballots, Miller said.

He said Varnell’s charter has no provision that would allow the council to appoint a mayor, so until the election, David Owens, the mayor pro tem, will continue to lead the city’s meetings.

If Varnell receives permission for a July 15 election, qualifying will begin June 16.
