CHATSWORTH — Mohawk Industries’ longstanding relationship with the Murray County community extends beyond its role as an employer. In honor of the men and women that work at Mohawk’s Chatsworth and Eton facilities, the Mohawk Carpet Foundation recently presented a $10,000 matching grant to the Murray County chapter of the American Red Cross.
“Mohawk strives to be a leader in the community and considers the support of important organizations like the American Red Cross a key part of its civic responsibilities,” said June Sullivan, human resources manager at Mohawk Industries. “We are proud of the many Mohawk employees who give their time and energy as community volunteers, and the company is always pleased to support worthwhile causes in this area. The American Red Cross helps people in Murray County in so many ways, and we’re delighted to support their good work through this donation.”
Sullivan added that the Murray County chapter of the American Red Cross obtained the contribution from Mohawk by raising an additional $10,000 from local individuals and businesses.
“This year, the Mohawk Foundation offered a dozen organizations a chance to obtain matching grants,” said Sullivan. “The Red Cross is the second to reach their goal, and I’m so proud of their staff and volunteers for raising those funds.”
Tommy Champion, programs director for the chapter, said the funds are particularly helpful during a challenging economic period.
“Like many nonprofit organizations, we typically face increased demand for services and reduced contributions during downturns in the economy,” said Champion. “The fact that our community could help us obtain these matching funds by increasing their contributions from 2007 or making a new gift to us speaks volumes about the level of compassion here in Murray County.”
Champion said the funds will be used to support the chapter’s current programs, including the local food bank.
“We’re seeing a sharp increase in demand for items from the food bank,” Champion said. “Many of these families have never sought assistance before, and the funds from Mohawk and the matching dollars will certainly help us to continue meeting our goal of assisting all the families that seek help from us.”
Mohawk Industries is the largest employer in Murray County. The company operates carpet and yarn manufacturing facilities in Chatsworth and Eton. Mohawk is a Fortune 500 flooring company that produces carpet, rugs, carpet cushion, ceramic tile, hard wood and laminate flooring.
“We believe that Mohawk can make a difference through its support of nonprofit organizations that are working to improve the quality of life in the communities where our employees live,” said Sullivan. “Tommy and everyone at the American Red Cross are doing important work every day. We’re glad to help them, and we certainly encourage others in the community to continue supporting their efforts.”
