Driver who hit deputy’s car identified

Mark Millican

The driver of a car that slammed into a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s patrol car on Tuesday at Griffin Park in Tunnel Hill, injuring him slightly, has been identified.

Angela Renee Norman, 40, of 2853 Keith Road in Ringgold, was charged by the Georgia State Patrol with DUI, driving too fast for conditions and failing to stop for a stop sign. She was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima and was in the car alone, according to a state patrol operator.

Deputy Randy Cole went to Hamilton Medical Center after the wreck, complaining of pain to his neck and an arm, said Maj. John Gibson with the sheriff’s office. Gibson said on Wednesday that Cole may have a broken hand and was taking time off to go to see a specialist. Cole was traveling on Highway 201 around 4:30 p.m.

Chief Roy Brunson of the Tunnel Hill Police Department did not work the wreck, but was on the scene near the police station.

“(Norman) was leaving the park at a high rate of speed and ran the stop sign at the park entrance,” he said. “The deputy did not have time to react and get out of the way.”

Norman was released from the Whitfield County Jail Wednesday morning on a $1,996 bond, according to a jail spokesman. She is scheduled to appear in Probate Court on July 15. A phone number for her could not be found.
