Students receive scholarships

Blood Assurance recently awarded the Crystal Green Memorial Scholarship to 12 area high school graduates, including Kevin Thomas of Dalton High School and Allison Barnett and Stefanie Bramblett, both of Northwest Whitfield High School.

Each winner received a $1500 scholarship from the Blood Assurance Foundation.

The scholarship has eased the financial burden of higher education for 86 area high school seniors since the program’s inception in 1999. It was founded in memory of Crystal Green, who received numerous blood transfusions throughout her life before losing her battle with aplastic anemia at the age of 21.

This year, the Foundation received more than 60 applications which were then judged by a panel who selected the scholarship recipients based upon their blood drive marketing plans. All recipients were required to have at least a B average and have scored at least a 20 on the ACT score or a 1,100 on the SAT.

To raise funds for the scholarship program, the Blood Assurance Foundation coordinates a celebrity golf tournament and auction each year in the fall.
