Ammonia leak contained

From Staff Reports

An anhydrous ammonia leak at Reddy Ice at 426 S. Hamilton St. in Dalton on Monday led fire officials to shut down Hamilton Street between Morris and Emery streets from about 11:30 a.m. to shortly after 4 p.m.

“It was a small leak and it was self-contained,” said Nancy Thorn, a spokeswoman for Reddy Ice’s corporate office in Dallas, Texas. “As part of our procedures we treat every leak the same.” Company officials called 911 and the building was evacuated.

No one was hurt, said Dalton Police spokesman Bruce Frazier.

The leak appeared to be in a gauge of one of the ice making machines, Frazier said. Thorn said the exact cause of the leak remained under investigation. A report was not immediately available from the fire department.

Officials with the nearby Whitfield Dalton Day Care evacuated the day care voluntarily, Frazier said.
