Adams running for another term

Mark Millican

Margaret Adams said she found out when first elected to the Chatsworth City Council in 1973 that council members do some good things, but people also “got mad at you.”

“For example,” she recalled, “if we had listened to some people we still wouldn’t have a parks and recreation program going.”

The Post 1 seat was a two-year term when Adams was first elected. It was changed to a four-year stint beginning in 1991. Adams is being challenged by Celeste Martin and Michael Ray in the Nov. 3 election.

A Chatsworth native, Adams graduated from Murray County High School and got a degree in education from Lincoln Memorial University. She taught in Middlesboro, Ky. and in the Murray County school system for 32 years.

A longtime tennis coach at Murray County High School, Adams has headed up the City Council’s parks and recreation committee for many years, and has been involved in helping with improvements like the resurfacing of the tennis courts and acquiring a new building, she said.

In recent years she has struggled with cancer on her neck, and has had a portion of her neck and face removed. Asked why she was running again, she said, “I don’t know how to explain it. I’ve got a girl and a man running against me. I don’t go around having a fit because someone’s running for office — they do a good job in their work. I’m not absolutely sure what the future holds. I haven’t seen anything bad happen (in Chatsworth) since all the changes have been made with the economy.

“I’ve just talked to different people I know who say, ‘Did you know I am voting for you?’ I say, ‘No, I didn’t.’ But I don’t hold it against anyone who votes against me.”

Adams missed three council meetings in 2008, and five thus far in 2009, including four straight from January through April. She said she has carried work home when she has missed meetings.
