Hundreds turn out to honor veterans

— The crowd that lined the streets of downtown Dalton Saturday were young, old, seated in wheelchairs, pushed in strollers or just standing as the Veterans Day Parade passed.
For 20 minutes, bands played, politicians waved, soldiers and future soldiers marched and vehicles used to shield soldiers in combat rolled down the streets as a symbol of the sacrifices soldiers made.
The Veterans Day Parade kicked off Saturday’s celebration to honor those who served in the armed services who are living — one of the key points made by retired Lt. Col. Kenneth G. Baskett. Baskett was one of two guest speakers during a ceremony held on the steps of the Whitfield County Courthouse attended by more than 100 people.
“Veterans Day is to honor those living who committed their lives to the military,” Baskett said. Memorial Day honors members of the armed services who have died, he said.
Baskett retired after 20 years of service in the U.S. Army. After leading JROTC programs in Atlanta schools, he now provides JROTC programs for students who are home schooled.
Gordon County Commissioner Richard M. Gordon, also a retired lieutenant colonel, also gave brief remarks.
“There are those that say we are wrong,” Gordon said. “But the fact that they say that means we are right. If they lived in another country, they would probably be arrested for speaking their mind.”
Earnest Stewart of American legion Post 112 was named Veteran of the Year.
“He has been an inspiration to me,” said John Wilson before presenting Stewart the award. “I have watched him and I wish I had his energy.”
Stewart is a member of the honor guard for American Legion Post 112 and works with area Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in putting flags out at cemeteries, said John Paul Bledsoe, the post commander.
“I want to thank everyone,” Stewart said. “God bless everyone and catch you later.”
