Dalton Police involved in alleged bank robber arrest

Mark Millican

A suspected bank robber walked right into the hands of law enforcement authorities on Thursday, and the Dalton Police Department took part in the arrest, a spokesman said.

Kevin West, 44, of Gilmer County, was arrested late Thursday in Rocky Face, according to an investigator with the Calhoun Police Department. The DPD’s Bruce Frazier said the Calhoun department and U.S. marshals notified Dalton police they had located West, and two detectives were sent to assist.

“(West) was staying at the Guest Inn, but he wasn’t there when (authorities) got there,” said Frazier. “Then he pulled in (to the parking lot) and drove right by the marshals. He got out of his car and tried to walk in The Oyster Pub, and they took him down in the parking lot.”

A spokeswoman at the Gordon County Jail said West was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of arms by a convicted felon and possession of a weapon while committing a crime. She said West had not been given bond, and did not know when he would appear before a judge.

According to Calhoun police officials, West is a suspect in the Nov. 2 robbery of Georgia Bank & Trust at 135 W.C. Bryant Parkway in that city.

Citing earlier reports, the Calhoun Times said a lone male entered the bank in the afternoon and handed the teller a note demanding money. The man pulled a handgun and told the teller not to bring attention to him or he would start shooting. The man left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
