Police investigate pool death

Investigators are looking into what they said appears to be a case of a man drowning after diving head-first into the shallow end of a pool.

Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said authorities are awaiting an autopsy report before they give an official cause of death for Augustine Roblero Arriaga, who died after a Sunday evening incident at the Legacy of Dalton Apartments.

Frazier said officials are still looking into whether alcohol played a role. It appears the death was accidental, Frazier said, but the case was turned over to a detective as a precaution.

According to a witness statement detailed in an incident report, Arriaga, who was born in 1991, and a friend were near the pool Sunday taking pictures when Arriaga dove in head-first and wasn’t able to climb out of about four or five feet of water. A witness told police he tried to rescue Arriaga but was unable and had to leave him for a few minutes while he went for help.

Emergency responders provided first aid on the scene but were unable to save him, according to the report.
