Man killed in bypass wreck

A Dalton man died on Monday from a wreck on the South Bypass, authorities said.

James “Jim” Stuard, 55, of Callahan Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:12 p.m. by Whitfield County Coroner Bobbie Dixon.

Stuard was traveling east across the bypass from Piney Ridge Road in a 1990 Honda Civic LX and stopped in the center of the divided highways, a Georgia State Patrol crash report said. He then pulled into the northbound lane into the path of a truck.

“(The driver of the truck) stated he slammed on his brakes but was unable to avoid a collision,” striking Stuard’s car in the passenger side, Cpl. K.D. Hemphill wrote in the report. There will be no charges against the driver of the truck, the report said.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Pine Grove Baptist Church. Visitation is on Thursday at the church from 3 p.m. until the funeral hour at 6 p.m.
