Qualifying ends — finally — in Murray County

Qualifying ended Friday in Murray County with six candidates qualified for three seats on the Board of Education. It was the second time qualifying was held.

The qualified candidates are:

• District 5: Incumbent Robbie Moore and Frank Loyd. Both are Republicans. They will face each other during the May 20 general primary.

• District 6: Tim Howard qualified as a Democrat, and Heath Jones qualified as a Republican. Incumbent Brenda Sandlin, a Republican, did not qualify this time. She had qualified during the first round of qualifying, which was negated.

• District 7: Incumbent Jackie Rogers qualified as a Republican, and David Long qualified as a Democrat. Long had qualified as a Republican for District 6 during the initial qualifying earlier this month.

Chief Registrar Larry Sampson said outdated maps for the district lines resulted in two individuals qualifying in the wrong districts during the original qualifying. The elections office discovered the discrepancy, and Sampson requested a court order to hold qualifying again. Any candidate who wished to run had to qualify during the second round of qualifying this week.
