Editor’s note: This is the text of the letter the local chamber sent to Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ranger, and Georgia Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson.
The Executive Board of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce and its 800-plus member businesses support comprehensive immigration reform and the key elements of SB 744. Although the current proposal is not perfect, it is a substantial compromise and offers a better solution than allowing a broken system to continue.
The United States Congress has a financial and moral obligation to pass bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform. It is time for this issue to be resolved.
We respectfully request that you and your colleagues continue the process that will ultimately deliver legislation that secures our borders, and provides for those here to legitimately remain here, work here and pay taxes. And to eventually provide for the opportunity to become a U.S. citizen once they have completed all requirements for citizenship. We further ask that the burden of compliance for businesses large and small be reasonable and manageable.
Thank you for your service to our nation and for your favorable consideration of SB 744.
Brian D. Anderson Sr.
