Daily Citizen snags seven GPA awards

The Daily Citizen took home seven awards in its division in the Georgia Press Association 2014 Better Newspaper Contest.

The awards were given out Friday at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel during the group’s 128th annual convention. The Daily Citizen competed in Division B, which included newspapers with circulation between 8,000 and 29,999.

 “I am very proud of our staff’s showing,” said Jamie Jones, The Daily Citizen’s managing editor. “We are one of the smaller papers in our division, so we were going up against metro papers with much larger staffs. These awards are a testament to the fact any newspaper, no matter what the size, can produce quality journalism.”

There were 610 awards presented in 37 categories to 87 newspapers.

• Editorial writing: Second place, The Daily Citizen

• Education coverage: Second place, Chris Smith

• Lifestyle coverage: Second place, The Daily Citizen

• Business coverage: Third place, Charles Oliver

• Feature writing: Third place, Misty Watson
