House fire under investigation

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a house fire on Top Street in Dalton Monday that at least temporarily put a family of four out of their home.

Dalton Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Gary Baggett said neighbors called 911 shortly after 1 p.m. after they saw smoke and heard explosions. Within a minute, firefighters began arriving on the scene at 602 Top St. where flames were shooting out of a rental house, Baggett said.

“There were no injuries — firefighter or civilian,” Baggett said. “Nobody was home at the time of the fire.”

Fire department spokesman Bruce Frazier said investigators are still working to determine what sparked the fire.

Baggett said the house is believed to be a total loss or near-total loss, and the renters are staying with family for now.

Property owner Troy Smith said it’s his understanding the American Red Cross is also assisting the family.
