New member joins county school board

Tony Stanley says the Whitfield County Board of Education is “really going to control spending” this year.

Stanley, a Republican, was uncontested in the GOP primary last year and no Democrat qualified. He assumed the position on Jan. 1. Gary Brock, who previously represented District 3, did not seek re-election.

“I’ve had comments from folks I know, they’re concerned about money,” Stanley said. “I think that’s the biggest issue right now and that’s a concern these folks (board members) have, too, especially after the millage rate was raised last year.”

Board members voted on Sept. 28 to raise the property tax rate from 14.756 mills to 18.756 mills, nearing a 20-mill cap.

“I’ve come to a lot of the (board) meetings,” Stanley said. “But this is the first time I’ve been on the inside. I really hope to start setting some goals and making sure we meet those goals.”
