Report: Confession in drug-planting case

From Staff Reports

— An attorney for a fired Murray County Sheriff’s Office captain told The Daily Report “investigators have obtained a confession” from a non-law enforcement officer who admitted to planting drugs on the car of a woman who accused now ex-Magistrate Judge Bryant Cochran of soliciting her for sexual favors.

Larry Stagg, the attorney for Michael Henderson, told Atlanta-based The Daily Report, “I know that someone has confessed to planting the methamphetamine. I don’t know if that person has been arrested.”

The Daily Report also reported an obstruction charge against Edward Joseph Garmley, the husband of Angela Garmley, was dismissed. Edward Joseph Garmley was arrested during a traffic stop of his wife.

Angela Garmley was charged Aug. 14 by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office with possession of methamphetamine after an officer discovered a magnetized metal can he said contained the drug underneath her car during a traffic stop. Jason Anthony Southern, who was driving Garmley home in her car at the time, was also charged with possession of meth, driving with a suspended license and failure to dim headlights. She was arrested by Deputy Josh Greeson.

According to the incident report, Edward Joseph Garmley pulled up to the vehicle when Greeson stopped it near where the Garmleys live and didn’t listen to repeated instructions to stay away. Instead Edward Joseph Garmley kept “fussing at” Angela Garmley and Southern while the investigation was ongoing the report states. He was arrested for obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Drug charges against Angela Garmley and Southern have been dismissed. Sheriff Howard Ensley fired both Greeson and Henderson last week for making false statements to the GBI during the agency’s investigation.

Cochran is also under investigation for pre-signing warrants. He resigned Aug. 15. Cochran’s attorney, Page A. Pate, said Cochran never issued one of his 12 pre-signed warrants. Cochran has also denied the alleged sexual advances.
